Four Nutrients Your Thyroid Cannot Work Without
By Dietitian Saurabh Goyal

Your thyroid controls metabolism, energy, body temperature and even hair growth. Medicine replaces the hormone, but nutrition helps the gland and the body use it well.
1. Iodine
Needed to make thyroid hormone. Iodised salt in normal amounts, dairy and eggs are good sources. Avoid high-dose iodine supplements unless advised — excess can harm too.
2. Selenium
Helps convert T4 into the active T3 and protects the gland in autoimmune thyroid (Hashimoto's). Sources: 1–2 Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, eggs, mushrooms.
3. Zinc
Supports hormone production and hair health. Sources: pumpkin seeds, chana, sesame, cashews.
4. Iron
Low iron slows thyroid hormone production and causes fatigue and hair fall. Sources: green leafy vegetables, beetroot, jaggery, dates, rajma — eat with lemon or amla for better absorption.
Daily habits for thyroid health
- Take thyroid tablet empty stomach, 30–60 minutes before tea or breakfast
- Cook goitrogenic vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower) rather than eating raw in excess
- Heal the gut — absorption of nutrients and medicine depends on it
- Manage stress and sleep
Key takeaway
Feed your thyroid with real food, take medicine correctly, and test your levels regularly.
