Gut-Friendly Khichdi That Actually Tastes Good

Khichdi is India's original gut-healing food — light, complete in protein when made with moong dal, and comforting. Here is our clinic version.

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • ½ cup yellow moong dal
  • ¼ cup rice or little millet (samak / foxtail)
  • 1 cup chopped vegetables — carrot, lauki, peas, beans
  • 1 tsp ghee, ½ tsp jeera, pinch of hing
  • ½ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp grated ginger, salt to taste
  • 3½ cups water, fresh coriander

Method

  • Wash and soak dal and rice/millet for 20–30 minutes
  • Heat ghee in a cooker, add jeera, hing and ginger
  • Add vegetables and turmeric, sauté for 2 minutes
  • Add dal, rice/millet, salt and water. Pressure cook for 3–4 whistles
  • Finish with coriander and serve with curd or a little lemon

Why it heals

Moong dal is the easiest dal to digest. Ginger, jeera and hing reduce gas. Ghee supports the gut lining. Vegetables add fibre and minerals while staying soft and gentle.

Key takeaway

Make it your go-to dinner on heavy days or during a gut reset week.
